Why combine Cambodia and Laos
The two countries share a climate and a budget, so a single trip needs no change of gear or spending habits. Destio tags both as tropical, budget-friendly and suited to culture, nature and adventure, and both work for solo travellers, couples and friends. On the numbers, Laos is slightly cheaper (about €28 a day against about €30) and slightly higher on safety (75/100 against 72/100), so the gap between them is small. What differs is the character of the trip, which is why they work as a pair rather than as alternatives. If you are still deciding between them rather than combining them, see our Cambodia vs Laos comparison.
1. 🇰🇭 Cambodia — temples, river cities and the coast
Cambodia is known for Angkor Wat at sunrise, the floating villages around Tonlé Sap and the humbling temples that surround them. Phnom Penh is a river capital that deals openly with its recent history, and the southern coast around Kep and Kampot is where travellers slow down. Destio rates it at about €30 a day with a safety score of 72/100.
The best months are in the cool season. Destio's February pick for Cambodia is Angkor without the rain and without May's 38°C, with mornings cool enough to climb temples before the crowds arrive. Start here if you want the headline sights early in the trip, while your energy is high.
2. 🇱🇦 Laos — the slow half of the route
Laos is what you move on to when you want fewer crowds. Slow boats on the Mekong, Luang Prabang's monks at dawn and the turquoise pools of Kuang Si are the classic draws, and the pace is deliberately unhurried. At about €28 a day it is the cheaper of the two, with a safety score of 75/100.
Destio picks Laos for January: the Mekong is low, the skies are clear, and January is the coolest month of the year in Luang Prabang. That is a good reason to finish a Cambodia and Laos trip in the north, where the cool air is a relief after the temple heat further south.
When to go: the months that suit both
Destio tags both countries for winter and spring, so the overlap is wide. Its two editorial picks sit at the start of the window: January for Laos and February for Cambodia. A trip that runs from late January into February fits both picks, and ordering the route either way works. Cool, dry weather is also peak season in the tropics, so book flights and rooms early. Check the cheap flights page for prices to the region.
Adding a third country
Many travellers stretch a Cambodia and Laos trip into a longer loop. Two neighbours are worth a look, and both already have comparison pages:
🇻🇳 Vietnam costs about €32 a day with a safety score of 79/100, the highest of the four countries here. Destio tags it for spring and autumn, so its best season only partly overlaps with Cambodia and Laos. It adds city life, Halong Bay and lantern-lit old towns. See Cambodia vs Vietnam and Laos vs Vietnam, or read the Vietnam destination page.
🇹🇭 Thailand is the easy add-on at about €45 a day, with a safety score of 76/100. It is tagged for winter and spring like Cambodia and Laos, and it brings beaches, which neither of the other two offers. Compare it with the pair on Cambodia vs Thailand and Laos vs Thailand, or open the Thailand destination page.
